IMPI Project (Internationalisation Indicators)

Between 2009 and 2012 the ACUP has been partner of Indicators for Mapping and Profiling Internationalisation (IMPI). This project was coordinated by the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE) and was created with the purpose of developing a tool to measure the profiles of internationalization of higher education institutions. For this porpoise it has been used comparable indicators and targets and introduced proposals in order to improve the international ranking of universities. The list of indicators is set both in terms of its relevance as acceptance of the disposal by the community.

Funded by the European Commission under the Lifelong Learning program, the IMPI project has developed a tool -the IMPI toolbox- for measuring the internationalization of universities in a time when competition in higher education cannot opt out of their outreach and where transparency and accountability in this area are still far to occupy their rightful place.

The main project partners, together with the CHE, are ACA (Academic Cooperation Association), Brussels, Nuffic (Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in Higher Education), the Netherlands; SIU (Center for International Cooperation in Higher Education), Norway, CampusFrance, French and Perspektywy (Fundacja Edukacyjna) of Poland. Besides ACUP, more than twenty European institutions have contributed to the initiative as associate partners.

The participation of ACUP in this project responds directly to the strategic framework of the Catalan public universities international plan. This plan aims to participate actively in thinking about internationalization and participate in the definition and analysis indicators of internationalization and international rankings. The project objectives are complemented by the launch of a series of instruments of dissemination (workshops, symposia, web page) from which we have wanted to build multiple plans results discussion between the parties before its implementation. The initiative aims, in turn, gave impetus to the process of internationalization of universities and increase its prestige through outreach to improve their competitiveness.

The IMPI project is over, but the IMPI toolbox will still be available online and free of charge to any institution interested in self-institutional and international benchmarking. Parallel to this project the Catalan Association of Public Universities (ACUP), the institutions from the Interuniversity Council of Catalonia (CIC) have been working on the selection and definition of an appropriate set of indicators of internationalization of the university system in Catalonia.
