Seminar “Regional competitiveness and universities. The role of universities in regional strategies for smart specialization in Europe”

The seminar “Regional competitiveness and universities. The role of universities in regional strategies for smart specialization in Europe’’ is to be held on 3 June at the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site in Barcelona, organized by the Catalan Association of Public Universities (ACUP), in the context of the initiatives Knowledge, Territory and Innovation Platform (Plataforma CTI) and the Global University Network for Innovation (GUNI), and in collaboration with the S3Platform (PTS-JRC, European Commission). Universities play an increasingly important role in the economic, social, technological and cultural development of the regions. The new European policy to foment regional strategies for smart specialization and their link with the investment of European Structural Funds poses a challenge for the regions of Europe: it places research and innovation as strategic policies in Europe and in all its regions. The Seminar will look closely at these aspects, in which the governance of the stakeholders in the knowledge economy is critical. The aim throughout the seminar is firstly to perform a global analysis of the role of universities in RIS3 European regional policy, and secondly to learn first-hand of cases of regions where participation by university institutions is a key factor of development.
