Challenges to Academic Freedom and the Protection of Academic Refugees
Barcelona, Sala Polivalent, Edifici Mercè Rodoreda (Ramon Trias i Fargas, 25) Universitat Pompeu Fabra
Since their creation, universities have promoted critical thinking, debate and dissidence. Academic freedom is a fundamental value of higher education, but it has two main problems: lack of discussion in the international arena and serious threats to its practice in both democratic countries and authoritarian countries with different levels of repression.
In this framework, the Catalan Association of Public Universities (ACUP) and the Scholars at Risk network organize a seminar on 'Academic freedom and the protection of academic refugees' that will address the current problems of academic freedom in the world and the possibilities of protection of academic refugees at universities.
The seminar will include the presence of an academic refugee from Syria who is beneficiary of the Scholars at Risk host programme and who will explain his personal experience.
The seminar will be held in English.
